About Our Library
We are very proud of our Library Media Center here at Compton Junior High. Built in 1991, it is one of the newest and largest libraries in the Bakersfield City School District.
Resources
Our fully automated Library Media Center houses approximately 22,000 resources:
- Fiction and non-fiction books
- Encyclopedias
- Reference books
- Magazines
- Newspapers
- CD-ROMs
- Books on tape
- Videotapes
- DVDs
- Laserdiscs
- Textbooks for overnight check-out
We have 12 computers with internet access for student use.
Hours
The Compton Library Media Center’s extended hours are:
- Before School - 7:15 – 7:37 am
- After School - 2:00 – 2:45 pm
New Students may pick up their cards in the Library the Friday after they enroll.
Lost Cards
Replacements for lost cards cost $1.00 and may be purchased in the Library.
Check Out Policies
Students may check out up to 3 items on their Library Card. Books may be kept for 2 weeks; magazines may be kept for 1 week. Items may be renewed if they are NOT overdue.
Programs offered by the Compton Library include:
- The Accelerated Reader Program: an incentive-based reading program where students choose books at their own reading level, then take quizzes to earn points.
- The Volunteer Library Assistant Program: an elective for students who wish to work in the Library.
- Collaborative Teaching: where the Library Media Teacher works closely with classroom teachers to present content information and research skills simultaneously.
- The California Young Reader Medal Program: a state-wide program where students read selected books in various categories and vote on the one they like best. (No adult voting allowed!)
Mission
The Mission of the Compton Junior High School Library Media Center is to help all students and staff to become more information literate by providing:
- A variety of materials which meet curricular needs and are of interest to students.
- Access to those materials to as many individuals at the school site as possible.
- Training that enables each individual to utilize these materials to their fullest capabilities.
- An atmosphere which is conducive to study and creative thinking, and inspires students to become lifelong learners.
